Bach: St. John Passion
March 16, 17, 18, 2018
Bay Choral Guild under Artistic Director Sanford Dole presents the original 1724 version of Bach’s St. John Passion, a bold, imaginative and strongly poetic portrayal of the Crucifixion as described by the Apostle John.
The Guild is accompanied by the Jubilate Orchestra of period instruments, David Wilson, Concertmaster. Tenor Corey Head is the Evangelist, and Jesus is sung by baritone Jeffrey Fields.
The chorus performs dual roles. Inside the drama, they portray hostile, spiteful crowds. On the fringes, they comment as devout Christian observers via the chorales and the large-scale choral movements that open and close the story. Our soloists, Tonia d’Amelio, Heidi Waterman, Michael Desnoyers, and Nikolas Nackley, perform the arias and bring the Passion to life with their extraordinary voices, and the emotion expressed in the individual solos.
There will be a pre-concert lecture by Sanford Dole thirty minutes before the performance.
